What a skin fade is

A skin fade takes the sides and back from your chosen length on top all the way down to bare skin, with no line where one guard length meets the next. Done right it looks smooth from every angle, including the one you can’t see in the mirror. Tight skin fades are what Alex is known for, and the cut people drive in for.

Low, mid, high, bald or taper

The names are about where the fade starts and how far it goes:

  • Low fade: starts just above the ears and the neckline. Clean, quiet and office-friendly.
  • Mid fade: starts roughly halfway up the sides. The most popular middle ground.
  • High fade: climbs to the temple, where the side turns into the top, for maximum contrast with the length up top.
  • Bald fade: any of the above taken right down to the skin at the bottom.
  • Taper: only the sideburns and neckline get shorter; the sides keep more length. Good if you want something softer.

Not sure which one you want? Say so. Head shape, cowlicks and how you style the top all change what will look best. Drop, burst and taper variations are laid out side by side in the guide to fade types, so you can point at the one you like before you sit down.

How Alex does it

It starts with a conversation about how short you want the bottom, where the blend should sit and what you do with the top. Then the blending, section by section, checked from every side until there are no lines left. The edges get cleaned up last, around the ears and along the neckline, so the whole thing looks finished, not just short. Reviewers keep coming back to the same things: he listens, he pays attention to detail, and he’s quick without rushing.

How often to come back

A tight skin fade looks its best for about two weeks. Every 2 to 3 weeks keeps it sharp; a low fade or a taper can stretch to 3 or 4. The full schedule by style is in our guide on how often to get a haircut. Easiest move: pick your next time before you forget.

Skin fade FAQ

Fade questions, answered

How much is a skin fade at Pearl River Barber Shop?

A skin fade costs $40 and takes about 20–30 min. That’s the same price as a regular haircut. Walk-ins welcome when the chair’s free. Booking guarantees your spot.

How often should I get a skin fade touched up?

Every 2 to 3 weeks keeps a skin fade looking fresh. The bottom is taken down to the skin, so growth shows there first, usually after about ten days. A low fade or a taper can stretch to 3 or 4 weeks.

What’s the difference between a low, mid and high fade?

It’s where the fade starts. A low fade begins about an inch above the ears, a mid fade roughly halfway up the sides, and a high fade up at the temple, where the side turns into the top. A bald fade goes all the way to bare skin. The higher it sits, the sharper the contrast. Our guide to fade types covers drop and burst fades too.

Is a taper the same as a fade?

Close, but no. A taper only shortens the hair at the sideburns and the neckline and keeps more length around the sides. A fade blends a larger area of the sides and back down, often to the skin. Our taper vs. fade guide has a side-by-side table, or just ask in the chair.
